Kayla, Hastings is a good friend of Poirot, so he shows up in several Agatha Christie novels.
The whole sad look sort of came about on accident. It so happened that there was a leaf stuck into his snow-head right about where is mouth is, and he looked so cutely forlorn that we decided to put his real mouth there. I think it's adorable!!
